Not much is known about the second generation Leaf, as Nissan has done a good job keeping any information close to the vest. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn did confirm that the second generation Leaf will feature the company’s (self-driving) technology.

It is rumored that the new model will be available with two battery sizes, much like Tesla does with its models. The Leaf will most likely be available with the smaller battery size first, followed by the larger battery pack which should offer over 200 miles of range. This is much like what Leaf had done in the past, offering the 24 kWh battery pack (84-mile range) alongside the 107-mile 20 kWh battery.

Despite holding the title of the best-selling EV in the world’, the new Leaf will find immediate competition with the , which will be available nationwide in August and upcoming which will begin production in July as the company hopes to start deliveries on its almost 400,000 orders. The Leaf’s market leadership may help keep Nissan on top.

The 2018 Leaf is expected to go on sale by the end of 2017, but no official date has yet been confirmed.
